The Silver Lining of Near-Death Experiences

By: Ruchi Sankolli

Near-death experiences can be frightening, yet relieving at the same time. The fact that makes near-death experiences the most unusual is that only 1 in 10 people experience them. That means that only 10% of people actually experience them. However, there is a bright side to them as well: near-death experiences can teach us so much more about the meaning of life and how to actually live our lives to the greatest potential.

The way I see it, near-death experiences can be a test. A test that combines so many things: faith, regret, relationships, etc. They are a test to see if we are living our lives and cherishing each moment. While they can be traumatizing, finding the meaning and purpose behind such experiences can be helpful. Near-death experiences also help stimulate personal growth, as one achieves a new understanding of life. So, here are a couple of lessons that near-death experiences can teach us about life and death alike:

1. Having no regrets

This is one of the most important things to remember in life. Making sure that we do everything that makes us happy and proud is the best way to have no regrets. Near-death experiences make you aware of such things, and they make you ask yourself:

Do I have any regrets?

That question makes you think about whether you have been doing the right things. Whether you are doing what makes you happy and whether you are living to your potential. If you were to die in that one moment, would you feel satisfied with what you had done with your life up to that point? So, start living your life with no regrets, because you want to feel satisfied and accomplished. Everyone wants to know that they have done so much in their lives and having regrets takes away that sense of achievement.

2. Be kind

This is another critical purpose to life. Being kind can go a long way, especially in moments of near-death. At those moments, you never know what will happen. You never know who is on your side and who is not. At those moments, you are at the mercy of others.

The way I see it, when you are kind to others, you have achieved one of your many purposes in life. And when you are kind, you grow, and so do others. When you are kind, the world acts in your favor, and that kindness comes back to you in ways you have never known.

Near-death experiences can encourage you to be kind, to help others, and to be there for them. Because when someone saves your life, the world is giving you another chance. So live your life by the golden rule and life will be golden.

3. Being present for every moment

They say you only live once. Nowhere is that more applicable than in near-death experiences. They really show someone the meaning of cherishing every moment and being present. Whether it is with your loved ones or at work, be there in that moment. Because those moments go as quick as they come, and that triggers a lot of regrets later. With people, you never know when you will see them for the last time. You never know who sticks around or who leaves. And with moments, that is a few minutes less that you actually live your life. Being present in every moment prevents regrets later in life.

Being present also means you care. Show your loved ones that you care, by showing up for them. What happened in the past, we cannot change. And what happens in the future, we don’t know. So, make the best of moments as they are now. And that will go a long way.

4. Be happy

This is the last and most important thing in life. Being happy should be your ultimate desire and goal in life. Sure, being successful is another thing, but make sure you are happy with where you are, because happiness goes a long way in personal development. Not being happy means that you are essentially forcing yourself in situations you don’t want to be in, and that leads to dullness in life.

Near-death experiences teach you how to change your life, so being more happy and doing things that you love is a great place to start. Remember that your life is your own, so doing what makes you happy is the most important thing. So, ask yourself this question: Am I happy? If the answer is yes, then keep on going. If the answer is no, then find out what does make you happy and turn your life around.

Life is a very fickle thing. It can go just as fast as it comes. Near-death experiences are an example of this. Even though they may be frightening, there are so many things about life that you can learn from just one dangerous, yet life-changing moment. What makes near-death experiences scary is the feeling that life is incomplete; that you haven’t lived or reached your potential. So go now, and live your life; talk to your friends and family, go outside, read a book, take a vacation. Living is a beautiful thing, and we should start embracing that. Because when the end comes, all of us deserve to look back and say that we lived all those beautiful, long years in happiness.
