Today, animals have more capabilities than just a food source or friendly companion. They have the ability to help humans with serious problems like visual impairment, or anxiety. You will mostly see “man’s best friend” in these roles, as they have an intelligent nature and a strong connection with humans. However, miniature horses are also on their way to becoming an important type of service animal. Their responsibility is to assist people with disabilities, both mentally and physically.
What types of service animals are there?
Allergy detector dogs
Autism service dogs
Diabetic alert dogs
Guide dogs
Hearing dogs
Mobility assistance dogs
Psychiatric service dogs
Seizure alert dogs
How are they utilized?
Service animals have multiple purposes. People have many different types of ailments, and these furry friends do their best to accommodate these needs. They include:
Helping the visually impaired with navigation
Alerting the hearing impaired individuals to the presence of sounds or people
Engaging in rescue work
Pulling wheelchairs
Helping during seizures
Sniffing out allergens
Retrieving items (phone, remote, etc.)
Providing physical support to those with mobility issues
Calming individuals with psychological/neurological disabilities by preventing impulsive actions
What does it take to train them?
All animals are compassionate in their own way, however, it takes a lot to qualify as a service animal. Some are born with nature, and others are trained beautifully for it. They need to display:
Dedication: the desire to work will make the training easier
Discipline: they can’t be distracted easily, or make a commotion in public
Intelligence: performing complex tasks is crucial for the work ahead
Caring disposition: a friendly, loving demeanor will allow the animal to enjoy its work
We are lucky to have these intelligent creatures, helping us complete day-to-day activities. Without them, it would be difficult to have a stable routine, and that support is greatly appreciated. It’s important that they are accessible everywhere, so make sure you advocate for service animal availability in local places around you. These cuddly creatures aren’t a cure, but they make life more bearable by providing a source of comfort, hope, and joy!
