Effects of Coffee on the Teenager Brain

By: Panteha Rezaei

A vast number of people around the world drink coffee on a daily basis due to it giving individuals a boost of energy when needed. Approximately 80% of the human population consumes caffeine, and 73% are children. Caffeinated products have a number of side effects, for instance, insomnia, restlessness, nervousness, muscle twitching, and many more.

Our brains have key connections, which causes the neurons to communicate with one another, but caffeine has the ability to take over the neurons, and make them less efficient. Since a handful of teenagers consume caffeine, they will most likely develop side effects that could also affect their daily activities in a negative way. There are large numbers of teenagers who would feel like they are “addicted” to caffeine, which causes them to have a hard time reducing their caffeine intake. Researchers have discovered that after they stop consuming caffeine, teens may experience symptoms of withdrawal. Some common withdrawal side effects teenagers go through include: headache, sleepiness, trouble concentrating, difficulty in completing tasks, anxiety, and even depression.

Caffeine may be helpful by waking oneself, but consuming too much of it could lead to serious side effects on teenage brains. Being a teenager means your brain is still growing, but unfortunately caffeine has the ability to slow down the expansion of the human brain, so it is important to limit yourself of how much you consume per day.
